Bent Frequency and Spektral Quartet present George Crumb's monumental work, Black Angels and works by Carolyn O'Brien, Robert Scott Thompson, and David Brighton. Join us for a pre-concert lecture with composers O'Brien, Thompson and Brighton at 6:45pm.
ABOUT BLACK ANGELS
George Crumb’s Black Angels, for amplified string quartet, was inspired by the mood of the country at the time of the Vietnam War. Subtitled “Thirteen Images from the Dark Land,” it follows the journey of a soul through a fall from grace, to spiritual annihilation and finally to redemption, conveying the spiritual chaos surrounding war with fragmentary writing and a wide sonic palette. Contrasted musically in this piece are the stateside unrest during the Vietnam War and the current large-scale disassociation of American citizens from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a contrast which compels its audience to contemplate protests and demonstrations of past wars alongside those of the present. With the inclusion of numerological vocalizations, tam tams, maracas and water-tuned glasses, its effect is both elevated and haunting in its surrealism.
Founded in 2010, the Spektral Quartet is widely regarded as one of Chicago’s most magnetic and forward-thinking chamber ensembles. The group’s inclusive approach to concert format, shifting the role of audience member from spectator to ally, has earned it a loyal following within and beyond the city limits.
Since its inception, the Spektral Quartet has sought out the discourse between the masterworks of the traditional canon and those written this decade, this year, or this week.
The Spektral Quartet serves as ensemble-in-residence at the University of Chicago.
